The complete story
Founded in 1967 as the San Diego Rockets, the franchise relocated to Houston in 1971 and became a perennial playoff team behind Moses Malone and later Hakeem Olajuwon, who anchored back-to-back NBA championships in 1994 and 1995 (the second a sweep of Orlando). The Rockets became known in the 2010s and 2020s for advanced-analytics-driven, three-point-heavy offenses under GM Daryl Morey, featuring stars like James Harden, Chris Paul, and Russell Westbrook. The team has played at Toyota Center in downtown Houston since 2003 and maintains a geographic rivalry with the Mavericks and Spurs. After a lengthy rebuild around Alperen Sengun and a young core, Houston re-emerged as a contender in 2025-26 at 52-30 before a first-round playoff exit, and the team is now built around a 2025 trade for Kevin Durant alongside Sengun under head coach Ime Udoka.
