The Wizards franchise began in 1961 as the Chicago Packers, the NBA's first expansion team, becoming the Chicago Zephyrs a year later before moving to Baltimore as the Bullets in 1963. The team shifted to the Washington, D.C. area in 1973 (briefly called the Capital Bullets, then the Washington Bullets from 1974) and was renamed the Washington Wizards in 1997. Led by Hall of Famer Wes Unseld, the Bullets won their only NBA championship in 1978, defeating the Seattle SuperSonics 4-3, and returned to the Finals the following year but lost. Michael Jordan played the final two seasons of his career with Washington (2001-2003) as part owner turned player. The franchise has endured a long playoff drought in recent years, capped by a league-worst 17-65 finish in 2025-26 that delivered the No. 1 pick (AJ Dybantsa) in the 2026 draft; earlier that season, Washington also acquired star big man Anthony Davis from Dallas and guard Trae Young from Atlanta in separate trades. The Wizards play at Capital One Arena in Washington's Chinatown neighborhood, shared with the NHL's Capitals, and have had notable playoff rivalries with the Knicks and Cavaliers.
