The complete story
The Sacramento Kings trace their roots to 1923 in Rochester, New York, making them one of the NBA's oldest continuously operating franchises; as the Rochester Royals, they won the franchise's only NBA championship in 1951 behind Hall of Famers like a young roster that would later anchor Cincinnati. The team relocated to Cincinnati in 1957, then Kansas City-Omaha in 1972 (later Kansas City alone), before settling in Sacramento in 1985. The Kings endured the longest active playoff drought in major North American pro sports (one appearance from 1996 through 2022) until a 2022-23 resurgence under coach Mike Brown, led by Domantas Sabonis and De'Aaron Fox, finally broke the streak with the 'Light the Beam' era. Owner Vivek Ranadivé has run the team since 2013, and the Kings play at Golden 1 Center in downtown Sacramento. The 2026 offseason brought a jolt to the roster's veteran leadership: longtime Kings stalwart Russell Westbrook retired, while the team drafted Darius Acuff Jr. and continued building around Sabonis and new addition Zach LaVine.
