The complete story
The Lakers franchise was founded in Minneapolis in 1947, where, led by George Mikan, it won five championships (1949-1954) before relocating to Los Angeles in 1960. In LA, the team became one of basketball's defining franchises: Jerry West and Elgin Baylor-era teams, the 'Showtime' dynasty of Magic Johnson and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar in the 1980s, the Shaquille O'Neal-Kobe Bryant three-peat (2000-2002), Bryant's later titles (2009-2010), and a 2020 championship with LeBron James and Anthony Davis inside the pandemic bubble. The franchise's 17 championships rank second in NBA history behind Boston. The Lakers play at Crypto.com Arena (formerly Staples Center) in downtown Los Angeles and share one of basketball's fiercest rivalries with the Celtics. Entering 2026-27 the team is in transition: LeBron James departed in free agency for Philadelphia, and the roster is now built around 2025 trade acquisition Luka Dončić and Austin Reaves under coach JJ Redick, with new ownership led by Bob Iger and Josh Kushner, who purchased majority control from Mark Walter in August 2026.
