The complete story
The Warriors franchise dates to 1946 as a charter member of the Basketball Association of America in Philadelphia, winning titles in 1947 and 1956 before Wilt Chamberlain-led teams moved the club to San Francisco in 1962. Renamed the Golden State Warriors in 1971, the team won a championship in 1975 behind Rick Barry, then spent decades as a middling Bay Area club playing in Oakland. Under coach Steve Kerr, the Warriors built a dynasty from 2015-2022, with Stephen Curry, Klay Thompson, and Draymond Green combining for four titles (2015, 2017, 2018, 2022) and a defining rivalry with LeBron James's Cleveland Cavaliers. The franchise moved into Chase Center in San Francisco in 2019, ending a 47-year run across the bay in Oakland. Entering 2026-27, the Warriors are retooling around an aging Curry, Jimmy Butler, and Draymond Green after Jonathan Kuminga's departure, with owners Joe Lacob and Peter Guber still at the helm.
