The complete story
The Orlando Magic entered the NBA as a 1989 expansion franchise and quickly became a 1990s power behind the 1992 draft arrival of Shaquille O'Neal and the acquisition of Penny Hardaway, reaching the 1995 NBA Finals, where they were swept 4-0 by Houston. After O'Neal left for the Lakers in 1996, Orlando rebuilt around Tracy McGrady and later Dwight Howard, whose dominant interior play carried the Magic to a second Finals appearance in 2009, a five-game loss to the Lakers. The Magic have never won an NBA championship. The team has played at Kia Center (originally Orlando Arena, renamed Amway Center in 2010) since 2010, and shares a notable in-state 'Sunshine State' rivalry with the Miami Heat. Entering 2026-27, Orlando fired head coach Jamahl Mosley in May 2026 and hired Sean Sweeney, aiming to build on a young core of Paolo Banchero, Franz Wagner, and Jalen Suggs after a first-round playoff exit to Detroit.
