The complete story
Founded in 1946 as the Buffalo Bisons before becoming the Tri-Cities Blackhawks in Moline, Illinois, the franchise relocated to Milwaukee in 1951, St. Louis in 1955, and finally Atlanta in 1968. As the St. Louis Hawks, the team won its only NBA championship in 1958, defeating the Boston Celtics 4-2, part of a run of four Finals appearances against Boston between 1957 and 1961. In Atlanta, Dominique Wilkins became the franchise's all-time leading scorer during the high-flying 1980s-90s era, and the team's most recent deep playoff run came in 2021 when Trae Young led the Hawks to the Eastern Conference Finals. Boston remains Atlanta's defining rival, with 11 all-time playoff meetings, while Southeast Division battles with Orlando and Charlotte have also been notable. The Hawks have played at State Farm Arena (opened in 1999 as Philips Arena) since relocating downtown, and enter 2026-27 after a 2026 offseason overhaul led by new front-office head Onsi Saleh.
