The complete story
The franchise began in 1967 as the Dallas Chaparrals of the American Basketball Association, relocated to San Antonio in 1973 and renamed the Spurs, then joined the NBA in the 1976 ABA-NBA merger. Behind Hall of Famers David Robinson and later Tim Duncan, and under the 29-year stewardship of head coach Gregg Popovich, San Antonio became the model NBA franchise, winning five championships (1999, 2003, 2005, 2007, 2014) built on selfless, team-oriented basketball and international scouting that produced stars like Manu Ginobili and Tony Parker. The Spurs play at Frost Bank Center (renamed from AT&T Center in 2024) and share a heated geographic rivalry with the Mavericks, Rockets, and Grizzlies within the Southwest Division. After a post-Duncan rebuild, the 2023 arrival of generational prospect Victor Wembanyama (No. 1 overall pick) and the 2025 trade for De'Aaron Fox fueled a rapid turnaround, as San Antonio went 62-20 in 2025-26 and reached the NBA Finals for the first time since 2014, ultimately falling 4-1 to the New York Knicks.
