The complete story
The Pelicans' lineage traces to the Charlotte Hornets, an NBA expansion franchise founded in 1988; that franchise relocated to New Orleans in 2002 as the New Orleans Hornets. In the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, the team temporarily split home games between New Orleans and Oklahoma City as the 'New Orleans/Oklahoma City Hornets' for the 2005-06 and 2006-07 seasons before returning full-time to New Orleans. The franchise rebranded as the New Orleans Pelicans in 2013 (the Hornets name and historical Charlotte-era records were transferred to the expansion team that became the new Charlotte Hornets). New Orleans has never reached the NBA Finals, though the Chris Paul-led Hornets and the Anthony Davis-led Pelicans produced several playoff appearances. The team plays at Smoothie King Center in downtown New Orleans and is owned by Gayle Benson, who also owns the NFL's Saints. After years built around Zion Williamson, the Pelicans fired Willie Green and hired former Magic coach Jamahl Mosley in May 2026 to lead a rebuild following a 26-56 2025-26 season.
