Data & sourcing notes (3) — conflicts flagged, not silently resolved
- Klay Thompson is listed as departing to Miami (Aug 21, 2026) in team transaction logs, but still appeared with a cap-hit figure on third-party salary sheets as of this research; likely a dead-money/stretch provision, not confirmed.
- Multiple overlapping multi-team trades in July 2026 (involving Dallas, Memphis, Washington, Atlanta) make some individual trade trees hard to fully disentangle from public sources; the transactions listed here reflect the most consistent reconstruction available.
- 2025-26 per-game stat totals for several newly-acquired players (Aldama, Risacher, etc.) reflect their time with their prior teams, not Dallas.

The complete story
The Mavericks joined the NBA as an expansion franchise in 1980 and played in relative obscurity until the Dirk Nowitzki/Steve Nash/Michael Finley era of the late 1990s and 2000s turned them into perennial contenders, culminating in the franchise's only NBA championship in 2011, when Nowitzki led Dallas past the heavily favored Miami Heat after also losing the 2006 Finals to Miami. The team has played at American Airlines Center in downtown Dallas since 2001 and maintains a geographic rivalry with the Houston Rockets and San Antonio Spurs within the Southwest Division. The post-Nowitzki era centered on Luka Doncic until a stunning February 2025 trade sent Doncic to the Los Angeles Lakers for Anthony Davis, a move that drew intense fan backlash; Davis himself was later traded to Washington in 2026 amid injury issues. Dallas then won the 2025 NBA Draft lottery and selected Duke forward Cooper Flagg No. 1 overall, and in 2026 overhauled its front office by hiring Masai Ujiri as president of basketball operations, Mike Schmitz as GM, and Dusty May as head coach.
