The complete story
Founded in 1898 as the Morgan Athletic Club in Chicago, the Cardinals are the oldest continuously operating professional football franchise in the United States and a 1920 NFL charter member. The club moved from Chicago to St. Louis in 1960, then to Phoenix/Arizona in 1988, settling at State Farm Stadium in Glendale since 2006. Historically slow to contend, the franchise's lone Super Bowl appearance came after the 2008 season (a loss to Pittsburgh), and as of 2026 it has gone a decade without an NFC West title. The nickname traces to founder Chris O'Brien's secondhand 'cardinal red' jerseys bought from the University of Chicago in 1898.
