The complete story
Founded in 1995 as the NBA's first franchise outside the United States, the Toronto Raptors are owned by Maple Leaf Sports & Entertainment and play at Scotiabank Arena. Vince Carter's high-flying stardom put the franchise on the map in the late 1990s and early 2000s, and Chris Bosh later anchored playoff teams before leaving in free agency. Behind Kawhi Leonard — acquired in a 2018 trade for longtime franchise face DeMar DeRozan — Toronto won its first NBA championship in 2019, beating the Golden State Warriors 4-2 with Leonard winning Finals MVP. After Leonard left for the Clippers as a free agent weeks later, the Raptors rebuilt around Scottie Barnes before a stunning 2026 sequel: a months-long saga brought Leonard back to Toronto in a trade completed in September 2026, sending Brandon Ingram, Gradey Dick, and a haul of draft picks to Los Angeles, and the two sides quickly agreed to a two-year, $115 million extension to keep him in Toronto long-term.
