The complete story
Founded in 1946 as one of the NBA's original charter franchises and based at Madison Square Garden ever since, the Knicks won back-to-back-era titles in 1970 and 1973 behind Willis Reed, Walt Frazier and Dave DeBusschere, with Reed's iconic Game 7 return in the 1970 Finals becoming one of the sport's defining moments. Patrick Ewing's Knicks reached the Finals in 1994 and 1999 but came up short both times, beginning a championship drought that stretched 53 years. After building around Jalen Brunson, Karl-Anthony Towns, OG Anunoby, Mikal Bridges and Josh Hart, New York finally broke through in June 2026, beating the San Antonio Spurs 4-1 in a Finals rematch of 1999 that included the largest comeback in Finals history (a 29-point deficit erased in Game 4) and a Brunson Finals MVP performance. The franchise is owned by Madison Square Garden Sports under James Dolan's chairmanship, and the 2026-27 season opens with a championship ring ceremony against the very 76ers team that eliminated Boston on the way to New York's title.
