The complete story
The 76ers' roots trace to the Syracuse Nationals, founded in 1946, who won the 1955 NBA championship before the franchise relocated to Philadelphia in 1963 and was renamed the 76ers. Wilt Chamberlain anchored the 1967 title team, and the star-studded 'Fo-Fi-Fo' squad of Moses Malone and Julius Erving swept the Lakers for the 1983 championship. Allen Iverson's heroic, injury-riddled run carried Philadelphia to the 2001 Finals, where they fell to a dominant Lakers team. The 2010s 'Trust the Process' rebuild around Joel Embiid never delivered a title, and the franchise underwent a major shakeup in 2026: after a first-round upset of Boston and a conference-semifinal loss to eventual champion New York, Philadelphia fired longtime president Daryl Morey, then traded for Jaylen Brown and signed LeBron James in a stunning offseason overhaul. The team plays in South Philadelphia at an arena freshly renamed Xfinity Mobile Arena (formerly Wells Fargo Center) in 2026.
