The complete story
The franchise entered the NBA in 1948 as the Fort Wayne Pistons, reaching the Finals in 1955 and 1956 before relocating to Detroit in 1957. The 'Bad Boys' teams of Isiah Thomas, Joe Dumars, Bill Laimbeer and Dennis Rodman won back-to-back championships in 1989 and 1990 on the strength of a physical, defense-first identity that fueled bitter rivalries with the Bulls and Lakers, and a retooled roster led by Chauncey Billups and Ben Wallace won a third title in 2004 over a star-studded Lakers team. The Pistons moved from the Pontiac Silverdome/Palace of Auburn Hills to downtown Detroit's Little Caesars Arena in 2017. After a long rebuilding stretch, Cade Cunningham and Jalen Duren anchored a resurgence, culminating in a 60-22 record and the 2025-26 Central Division title — the NBA's best regular-season record — under head coach J.B. Bickerstaff, before Detroit fell to Cleveland in the second round. Owner Tom Gores has controlled the team since 2011, and the front office signed Duren to a five-year, $200 million extension in October 2026.
