The complete story
The Cleveland Cavaliers joined the NBA as an expansion franchise in 1970 and have played home games since 1994 at the downtown arena now named Rocket Arena (previously Gund Arena, Quicken Loans Arena and Rocket Mortgage FieldHouse). The franchise's identity is tied to LeBron James, who starred for Cleveland from 2003-2010 and again from 2014-2018, delivering the city's first major sports title in 2016 with a historic comeback from a 3-1 Finals deficit against a 73-win Golden State team. Cleveland also reached the Finals in 2007, 2015, 2017 and 2018, losing each time to San Antonio or Golden State. A newer era built around Donovan Mitchell and Evan Mobley won 52 games in 2025-26 and reached the Eastern Conference Finals before being swept by New York. Owner Dan Gilbert has run the team since 2005, and the Cavaliers enter 2026-27 under head coach Kenny Atkinson after an offseason that re-signed James Harden and added Peyton Watson in a multi-team trade.
