Luke Drzewiecki kicked a 46-yard field goal with five seconds left to lift the Minnesota Golden Gophers past the Iowa Hawkeyes 13-10 on Saturday at Huntington Bank Stadium. The kick capped a game decided by four Iowa turnovers and a Minnesota defense that forced three interceptions off Hawkeyes quarterback Hank Brown.

Iowa tied the score at 10-10 with 3:46 remaining when Brown found Reece Vander Zee for a 37-yard touchdown, Vander Zee’s lone catch of the drive and his fourth reception of the day. Minnesota answered on the ensuing possession, setting up Drzewiecki for the game winner as time expired. Darius Taylor had given the Gophers their only offensive touchdown earlier, a 1-yard run in the third quarter, while Drzewiecki also connected from 31 yards in the first.

Key Moments And How It Was Won

Minnesota struck first on Drzewiecki’s 31-yard field goal with 12:14 left in the first quarter. Iowa answered in the second quarter when Caden Buhr made a 32-yard field goal with 6:49 remaining to tie it at 3-3. The Gophers took control in the third quarter when Taylor punched in a 1-yard touchdown run with 8:08 left, making it 10-3.

Iowa’s comeback bid came late. Brown’s 37-yard touchdown pass to Vander Zee with 3:46 left in the fourth quarter tied the score at 10-10 and capped Brown’s lone touchdown pass of the afternoon. Minnesota’s final possession set up Drzewiecki’s 46-yard kick with five seconds on the clock, the decisive score in a game that saw neither offense find consistent rhythm.

Top Performers

Drake Lindsey completed 14 of 26 passes for 137 yards and one interception for Minnesota, while Xavier Ford led the Gophers’ ground game with 33 yards on eight carries. Javon Tracy caught seven passes for 45 yards and added a 23-yard run on special teams duty that included a 28-yard kick return.

For Iowa, Brown finished 11 of 21 for 136 yards with one touchdown and two interceptions before Jeremy Hecklinski took over, completing 9 of 16 passes for 62 yards and throwing an interception of his own. Vander Zee’s 69 receiving yards on four catches paced all Iowa pass catchers, and L.J. Phillips Jr. led Iowa’s rushing attack with 25 yards on seven carries.

Minnesota’s Zack Harden anchored the winning defense with 12 tackles and a sack, while three different Gophers defenders, Joey Gerlach, TJ Bush Jr. and Matt Kingsbury, each hauled in an interception. Iowa’s Zach Lutmer led all tacklers in the game with 11 stops.

What It Means

Iowa’s four turnovers proved too much to overcome against a Minnesota offense that managed just 209 total yards. The Hawkeyes outgained Minnesota 288-209 and held a 16-11 edge in first downs, but three interceptions thrown by Brown and a lost fumble erased those advantages. Minnesota converted just 2 of 14 third-down attempts but made its opportunities count, scoring on all three of its drives that reached the red zone.

Both teams moved to 5-2 on the season with the result. Iowa entered the game ranked 15th. The loss snaps momentum the Hawkeyes carried after their win over Washington, detailed in Iowa’s 41-24 victory over Washington, and comes one week removed from a conference loss covered in Ohio State’s 31-14 win over Iowa. The matchup was previewed as the annual Floyd of Rosedale rivalry game in Total Apex Sports’ preview of the series.

What’s Next

Both programs now turn toward the next stretch of Big Ten play following Saturday’s result. Minnesota improved to 5-2 with the win, while Iowa fell to 5-2 despite outgaining the Gophers through the air and on the ground. Updated conference standings and matchups will shape each team’s path through the remainder of the season.
