Charlie Becker caught six passes for 126 yards in Indiana’s win over Ohio State on Dec. 6, leading the Hoosiers in both categories and announcing himself as the team’s top receiving threat. The performance capped a Charlie Becker Indiana breakout season that began with a three-star recruiting ranking and years of waiting for a real opportunity, according to ESPN.

Indiana coach Curt Cignetti saw the raw tools early. Becker came from athletic bloodlines and carried traits Cignetti said do not show up in every prospect.

“When you find a football player who has that athleticism to high jump or long jump … that’s a different type, and Charlie had all that,” Cignetti said, according to ESPN.

The Long Wait For A Chance

Becker’s path to the lineup was not immediate. His father, Dave Becker, recalled his son’s frustration during the years he spent waiting behind other options on the depth chart.

“He said, ‘I just want my chance. I want my opportunity to be out there.’ And I just kept telling him, ‘Buddy, just hang in there. It’ll come.

I promise you, it’ll happen. You’ll have your shot,'” Dave Becker said, per ESPN.

That patience paid off when an injury elsewhere in the offense forced Indiana to lean on him.

An Opening Created By Injury

Becker’s role expanded when quarterback Sarratt remained sidelined, pushing the coaching staff to get the ball into Becker’s hands more often. Cignetti described the shift directly.

“Sarratt was still hurt, and [Becker] was a guy that, all of a sudden, you had to get him the ball. That guy can really get vertical, get behind people, and make contested catches,” Cignetti said, according to ESPN.

That description lines up with what Becker did against Ohio State, where his six catches and 126 yards made him the focal point of the Indiana passing attack in a marquee win in Indianapolis.

From Depth Chart To Billboard

Becker’s production has turned him into a visible symbol for the program well beyond the field. Dave Becker said his son’s image now greets travelers before they even reach campus.

“It’s been fun seeing Charlie be on billboards and be the face of Indiana on things. You walk into the Indiana airport, and there’s Charlie’s face. It’s a joy, it’s a blessing, it’s hilarious,” Dave Becker said, per ESPN.

The family’s competitive streak helps explain how a three-star recruit developed into Indiana’s top target. Dave Becker said that mentality is built into daily life at home.

“Every single thing is a competition in our house, from puzzles to cleaning our rooms,” he said, according to ESPN.

No Letup After The Breakout

Cignetti has not seen Becker ease off since his 2025 breakout. The coach noted the receiver’s work ethic has stayed consistent even as his profile has grown, according to ESPN.

Becker reinforced that approach in the spring when he pointed to quarterback Fernando Mendoza as a model. Becker called Mendoza the hardest worker he had encountered and said he tried to copy that standard in his own preparation, per ESPN.

A recent highlight-reel catch also circulated on social media, with FOX Sports sharing video of the grab as Becker’s reputation continues to build nationally.

What’s Next

Indiana’s offense now runs through Becker as a focal point in the passing game, a shift from his early years as a developmental three-star prospect. The Hoosiers continue their season looking to build on the momentum from the Ohio State win, with Becker’s role expected to remain central to the attack. Fans can track the Hoosiers’ continued push in the Indiana vs. Rutgers preview as the team chases a perfect start.
