Diary of a Yankees Fan: The Yankees did something right. The team hired Kristen Hess as General Manager of the Hudson Renegades of the New York Penn League. After stumbling and getting swept in the division series by the Tampa Bay Rays, and bumbling through the start of the off-season, they are going to have a Zoom call to do a post-mortem on the season; they did something correct.
She is not the first female General Manager in Minor League history, but she does have a very interesting history herself. Perhaps the Yankees should hire a female General Manager. Diary of a Yankees fan, the Hudson Renegades will probably win the New York Penn League, and if the Yankees want to change their fate and win the World Series, then hiring a female General Manager to clean up their mess would make sense. Do you think the Yankees should hire a female general manager?
Diary of A Yankees Fan #13: Kristin Huss Work History

The Hudson Renegades play in Wappingers Falls, New York. Huss will be the ninth General Manager in the team’s 32-year history. She began with the team selling programs in 2001, and she eventually rose to become the Assistant General Manager of the team. The novelty of her new position, Diary of a Yankees fan, implies she may be being groomed for the job in the Bronx, but maybe not.
Diary of a Yankees fan, she will be the first female General Manager in the history of the team. She left that position and served for three seasons as the General Manager of the Pittsfield Suns of the Futures Collegiate Baseball League. She returned to the Renegades as Vice President of Community Partnerships after the 2018 season and left again in April 2021.
Since leaving the Renegades in April 2021, she has been the Senior Resort Operations Manager at LEGOLAND® New York Resort in Goshen, New York. There, she oversaw aspects of the park focusing on parking, admissions, guest services, guest communications, VIP experiences, retail, park presentation, and attractions.
She is very qualified. For instance, diary of a Yankees fan, while with the Renegades, Huss was named the New York-Penn League Female Executive of the Year in both 2013 and 2015. She was named one of Dutchess County Regional Chamber of Commerce’s “40 Under 40” in 2015. In her time in Pittsford, she was named the 2017 Futures League Executive of the Year and was inducted into the New England Baseball Hall of Fame as part of its Class of 2017.
Cleaning Up Messes
Women have been cleaning up messes since the dawn of time. In fact, this happened in my house last night. Diary of a Yankees fan: the Yankees are a mess. So, it stands to reason that it might take a woman to clean it up. The Yankees need a big jolt, a radical departure. Hiring a woman to a leadership position would be that radical departure. There are plenty of qualified women for either the Yankees (Manager or General Manager) position, and General Partner Hal Steinbrenner should consider hiring one. However, that will not happen since the team announced today, Oct. 21, that they are signing Cashman to an extension.
So, both Boone and Cashman are going to be back next year. The Yankee brain trust will be the same as it has been through the many failed seasons. We all hope that after the unprecedented embarrassment of this season, things will change, but they will not. There is some chance that Aaron Boone will never manage a Yankees game again, especially if we lose next season to a lockout. However, the details of Brian Cashman’s new contract are still pending; there is little doubt it will be for several years, much longer than any lockout.
Conclusion: You Get What You Get
One of the sayings of the daycare my children went to many years ago was, “You get what you get, and you do not complain.” As long as Yankee Stadium sells out and the fans buy merchandise and $10 Beers, there is no incentive for ownership to change anything. It does not matter, diary of a Yankees fan, if Hess, or other women, are qualified for the job; they will not get it, regrettably. They would be great for the job, and they would bring the type of change fans of the team want.
