Islanders lose to Senators 2-1. The Islanders played a game in Ottawa against an upset Senators team that was upset. The Islanders were coming off narrowly beating the Vancouver Canucks, who are one of the worst teams in the National Hockey League. The Senators, however, are coming off an embarrassing loss against a weak St. Louis Blues team. Despite that, the Senators are off to a good start and were expected to be a tough match-up at home.

This has been a strange season for the Senators. They lost maybe their best player, Brady Tkachuk, to free agency (he went to play with his brother on the Florida Panthers. Then they got off to an uncharacteristically great start. Since they were formed in 1990, they have historically had bad starts. However, this year they have gotten off to a 5-2 start. They have only figured out how to play hockey after Halloween. Did you think the Islanders had a chance in this game?

The Islanders were hoping to tread water while Mat Barzal was out injured. He is expected to be back on or about Oct. 20. In this game, they turned to Semyon Varlamov in this game in an effort to rest primary goaltender Ilya Sorokin. This game could have been a bad loss, but it was not. Islanders lose to Senators 2-1 in a shoot out. Here is how the game played out.

In the first period, Matias Maccelli scored for the Islanders. That was his second goal of this young season; he was looking like a good addition. That’s how the first period ended. The team was lucky to be on the lead because the Senators had two goals taken off the board. They hit a crossbar and were offside.

In the second period, Ridly Greig scored for the Senators. That goal tied the game at one and was a power-play goal. The best way to not allow power-play goals, especially on the road against a difficult opponent. The Islanders took three penalties in quick succession in this period. Nevertheless, the Islanders killed off two of the three penalties and escaped the period in a 1-1 tie. The Islanders won an NHL-high 16 games when being tied after two periods last season.

In the third period, there were no goals scored, so this game headed to overtime. The Islanders sought their first road win of the season. They were famously 10-0 in overtime games last season; however, this is a new season.

In overtime, the Senators scored on their third and final shot in the shootout. Islanders lose to Senators 2-1.

Goaltending Suffle

The Islanders are in an interesting position. The Islanders lose to Senators 2-1 in this game. They have one of the best goaltenders in the National Hockey League, Ilya Sorokin. However, he has worn down in the past two seasons. This season, it will be an interesting season-long story to see if Semyon Varlamov plays enough games to limit Sorokin’s workload. Of course, Varlamov is coming back from having both knees partially replaced. He made the team; he needs to play.

This Game and The Next

The Islanders lose to Senators in this game, 2-1. However, Semyon Varlamov played well. So, he, making just his second start of the season, is the player of the game. His role with the team is very important. He needs to play about 30 games this season if he is to provide starter Ilya Sorokin some rest. This game was a step in the right direction.

The Islanders next play the Toronto Maple Leafs on Saturday at 7 pm. The Senators next play a struggling Philadelphia team on Saturday at 7 pm. The Flyers are historically bad, 0-5-3 with a -21 goal differential after 8 games. In their next game, the Islanders will look for their first road win of the season, after Islanders lose to Senators 2-1 in this game.

Conclusion

The Islanders need to gain as many points as possible during the beginning of the season while Mat Barzal is out injured. To do that, the team cannot take penalties, as they did in the second period. They also took a penalty in overtime. They killed that one as well. This loser point was important for the Islanders, but Islanders lose to Senators 2-1. They also need good performances from their goaltender. This was, therefore, a very important game for Semyon Varlamov.
