Tennessee Titans coach Robert Saleh said Cam Ward will remain the team’s starting quarterback after Tennessee fell to 0-5 following a 26-3 loss to the Houston Texans on Sunday. Saleh made the comments after a Week 5 performance in which Ward completed 23 of 36 passes for 170 yards with one interception and took four sacks.

“Cam’s our starting quarterback,” Saleh said. “We’re gonna give him every opportunity to be successful this year. We’re gonna continue working with him, grinding with him and trying to help him get better.”

Saleh’s Public Backing Of Ward

Saleh’s comments came directly after Tennessee’s fifth straight loss to open the season, a span that has included a Week 4 defeat to the Baltimore Ravens that dropped the team to 0-4 for the second consecutive year. Rather than entertain a change under center, Saleh chose to publicly commit to Ward going forward, framing the approach as a continued development process rather than a short-term fix.

Ward offered his own explanation for why he believes he should remain in the lineup. “I just think my process,” Ward said. “What I’m willing to sacrifice each and every week to get to the player that I want to be, but also the player the team needs and the organization needs to win games.”

What The Backing Signals For Tennessee’s QB Plans

Saleh’s statement removes any immediate question about a quarterback change in Tennessee despite the winless start. It signals that the coaching staff views Ward’s struggles within the context of a longer-term plan rather than grounds for an in-season benching. The decision keeps Ward as the unquestioned starter even as the surrounding numbers have been difficult.

Against Houston, Ward faced pressure on 21 dropbacks, the second most in a game in his career, according to Next Gen Stats. Under that pressure, he went 9-for-16 for 70 yards with an interception. Through four games, Ward averaged a league-low 2.6 yards per attempt when pressured, the fewest yards of any quarterback in the league in those situations.

Season And Career Context

Entering Week 5, Ward ranked 20th in passer rating, 23rd in passing yards and 25th in EPA per dropback among NFL quarterbacks. Tennessee enters the stretch with the lowest-scoring offense in the league, a factor that has fueled scrutiny of both the quarterback position and the offense as a whole, a storyline Total Apex Sports covered in its Texans vs. Titans preview.

Across 21 career appearances, Ward has thrown for 3,895 yards with 18 touchdowns and nine interceptions, completing 60.4% of his passes with 5.9 yards per attempt. The Titans are 3-18 in games Ward has started. Despite the win-loss record, Ward’s completion percentage, yards per attempt, QB rating and QBR are all up in 2026 compared to his rookie season, while his sacks taken are down, according to FOX Sports.

Tennessee’s broader offensive concerns were also detailed in Total Apex Sports’ coverage of the Titans vs. Ravens preview before the 0-4 start.

What’s Next

Saleh’s comments keep Ward in place as Tennessee searches for its first win of the 2026 season. No timeline has been given for when the team might revisit the decision, and the next step for both Ward and the coaching staff will be the Titans’ following game as they try to end the 0-5 start.
