San Francisco 49ers wide receiver Deebo Samuel left Sunday’s game against the Seattle Seahawks with a hamstring injury and was ruled out for the rest of the contest. The injury occurred in the third quarter and added to a 49ers receiver group already missing several key contributors.
Samuel had been favoring his right hamstring earlier in the game before the injury became serious, according to ESPN. He finished his afternoon with two receptions for 21 yards and two carries for 4 yards. Samuel left the game with 5:06 remaining in the third quarter.
How The 49ers Deebo Samuel Hamstring Injury Happened
Seahawks linebacker Drake Thomas brought Samuel down on the play that ended his day, and Samuel fumbled the ball while trying to recover it. According to the Houston Chronicle, Samuel was motionless on the field for several seconds before limping to the sideline. Seahawks cornerback Josh Jobe recovered the fumble at the 49ers 35-yard line, and Seattle converted the turnover into a field goal four plays later to extend its lead to 26-21.
49ers Receiver Depth Chart
San Francisco entered Sunday’s game already without three of its top four wide receivers. Ricky Pearsall (knee), De’Zhaun Stribling (ankle) and Demarcus Robinson (ankle) are all on injured reserve. Samuel’s exit left the 49ers with an even thinner group at the position.
The situation worsened a few plays after Samuel’s injury when Jacob Cowing suffered an ankle injury on a kick return and was listed as questionable to return. With Samuel out and Cowing banged up, the only healthy receivers left for San Francisco were Mike Evans, Jordan Watkins and Brandin Cooks. That trio figures to carry a larger share of the offensive workload for as long as Samuel and Cowing are sidelined.
What’s Next
The 49ers have not released an update on Samuel’s hamstring injury or Cowing’s ankle injury beyond their in-game status. Any further word on Samuel’s availability would likely come as San Francisco prepares for its next game.
