The San Francisco 49ers are 4-0 after beating the Denver Broncos 24-14 on Oct. 4, but the 49ers injury report has grown long enough to test the depth that coach Kyle Shanahan has built behind his starters. San Francisco has absorbed injuries at wide receiver, fullback, edge rusher and linebacker since Week 3, yet the offense has still produced at a historic level through four games. The question now is how long that production holds if the injury list keeps growing.

Wide Receiver Depth Faces The Biggest Strain

No position group on the 49ers injury report has taken more hits than wide receiver. Mike Evans, who caught 12 passes for 137 yards and two touchdowns in his first season in San Francisco, left last week’s game with a rib injury. He returned to practice on a limited basis Oct. 2 and was listed as questionable for the Denver game. Evans told reporters, “If it’s something I can play through, I want to be there for my team the best I can,” according to FOX Sports.

Christian Kirk has been out since early in training camp with a calf injury. Shanahan said Kirk is not expected to be activated when first eligible but remains a possibility for Week 6. To add bodies to the room, San Francisco promoted veteran Brandin Cooks to the active roster this week after signing him to the practice squad the week before.

Shanahan praised the transition, saying, “He’s had a good two weeks. Came in last week right away, learning the stuff. I thought it was good last week and even better this week the more comfortable he gets.

Excited to have him here.”

Kittle’s Return Has Masked The Receiver Losses

George Kittle has helped cover for the receiver injuries despite returning from his own major setback. He tore his right Achilles on Jan. 11 and missed all of training camp before coming back in Week 1. Through the season’s early weeks, Kittle ranks fifth among all tight ends in receiving yards with 174, 11th in receptions with 12 and tied for first among tight ends with three touchdowns, according to Yahoo Sports. That production has let Shanahan manage the receiver injuries without the offense losing its identity, something detailed further in the Mike Evans injury update.

Juszczyk’s Absence Reshapes The Backfield Mix

Fullback Kyle Juszczyk suffered a knee hyperextension with a bone bruise in the Week 4 win over Denver and will sit out a few weeks. Shanahan named the internal options to fill the gap: “Yeah, (tight end) Luke (Farrell) and Brayden (Willis) and (tight end George) Kittle. They’re all pretty interchangeable, but it’ll definitely get Brayden some more ops. (Tight end Jake) Tonges would do that for us last year, the last couple of years, and lost him Week 1 and Brayden’s been ready for this role.” The shuffle leans on tight end depth rather than a true fullback replacement, a detail covered in the Kyle Juszczyk injury report.

Bosa’s Calf And The Pass Rush Timeline

Edge rusher Nick Bosa, the 2022 NFL Defensive Player of the Year, sustained a calf injury during warmups in Week 3. Shanahan said this week that Bosa is still out and the team is probably not expecting to get him back this week. San Francisco does have one piece of good news up front: Mykel Williams, who tore his ACL in Week 9 of the 2025 season, came off the PUP list on Sept. 30 and is hopeful to play against Seattle in Week 5.

Shanahan said of Williams, “Mykel, hopefully practice keeps going well, has a good week of practice and hopefully we can get him activated at the end of the week. But, it depends how the week goes.”

Linebacker And Offensive Line Add To The List

Linebacker Marques Sigle suffered a high ankle sprain on a kickoff return with 2:08 left against Denver. Shanahan confirmed the severity plainly: “Marques Sigle had a high ankle sprain. He’ll miss some time.”

Offensive lineman Upton Stout also went down in that game with an AC sprain in his shoulder and is day-to-day. “Upton Stout with a shoulder AC sprain. He’ll be day-to-day.

We’ll have to manage him through the week to see if we can get him to Sunday,” Shanahan said.

The Counterpoint: The Numbers Say The Depth Is Working

Despite the growing injury list, San Francisco’s statistical output argues the roster has absorbed the losses well so far. The 49ers lead the league in yards per play and success rate and rank second in scoring at 32.7 points per game, according to ESPN. San Francisco has gone 11 straight quarters without a turnover, lost yardage on just four scrimmage plays all season and is the first team in 12 years to allow zero sacks through three games.

Quarterback Brock Purdy has 10 total touchdowns through three games, tying Steve Young’s 1998 mark and Frankie Albert’s 1948 mark for the most in franchise history over that span. Purdy credited the group in front of him: “Obviously, the play calling, the boys up front, the receivers being on top of making sure they’re running the right routes and getting the ball out on time and stuff on our end at quarterback. So, it’s a unit thing.

Obviously it starts with the boys up front too, though. They’re playing their butt off right now.” Broncos coach Sean Payton said before the Week 4 matchup that Purdy “is playing at a real high level, very decisive,” and called the 49ers offensive line’s performance “impressive.”

Those numbers show a team that has not yet paid a visible price for its injuries, even if the list keeps growing on both sides of the ball.

What To Watch Next

San Francisco’s receiver corps remains the clearest pressure point, with Kirk’s Week 6 possibility and Evans’ rib injury both still in play. The defensive front will be watched closely for word on Bosa and for whether Williams gets activated in time for the Seahawks game. Shanahan’s health updates during the week should clarify Stout’s status for Sunday and give a clearer picture of how long Sigle and Juszczyk will be out.
