The list of undefeated NFL teams after Week 5 still includes the San Francisco 49ers, Minnesota Vikings and Kansas City Chiefs, each sitting at 4-0 entering the week’s action. The more interesting question is which of those starts is built to hold up, because the three teams got there in very different ways, and the results so far suggest only one of them is dominating in a way that typically carries deep into the season.

San Francisco has the most statistically imposing case. Minnesota has the most precarious one. Kansas City is somewhere in between, already dealing with losses that could affect its passing game going forward. None of the three has faced a signature gauntlet yet, but the tape from the first month tells a clear story about sustainability.

49ers Have Backed Up Their 4-0 Start With Historic Numbers

No team among the undefeated NFL teams after Week 5 has a more complete résumé than San Francisco. The 49ers became the first team since Peyton Manning’s 2005 Indianapolis Colts to allow zero sacks through four games, an offensive line achievement that speaks to both protection scheme and execution, according to Yahoo Sports. San Francisco has also beaten three of last season’s final four playoff teams, a quality-of-win marker that neither Minnesota nor Kansas City can match.

This marks the third time under coach Kyle Shanahan that the 49ers have opened 4-0, and the previous two hot starts both ended in Super Bowl appearances, per Yahoo Sports. The one blemish worth tracking is the loss of fullback Kyle Juszczyk to injury, though the sources do not detail his specific status going forward.

Vikings’ Defense Has Carried A Thin Offensive Margin

Minnesota’s unbeaten record is real, but the scoreboard says it has been fragile. The Vikings needed a 15-10 win over the Miami Dolphins in Week 4 to stay perfect, a game in which Miami managed just 198 yards and 11.5 points per game on the season, according to azcentral.com. Beating one of the NFL’s least productive offenses by five points is not the kind of result that typically signals a juggernaut.

Minnesota’s record is undeniable at 4-0, and the Vikings have outlasted every opponent they have faced. But a win total built on close games against struggling offenses is a different foundation than San Francisco’s blowout-caliber dominance, and it leaves more room for one bad week to end the streak. Related coverage of the Vikings’ season includes their win over the Saints to stay unbeaten and the news that tight end T.J. Hockenson was ruled out with a concussion in that same stretch.

Chiefs Face Questions After Losing Key Pass-Catchers

Kansas City’s path to 4-0 came with a cost. The Chiefs lost wide receivers Rashee Rice and Tyquan Thornton during their Week 4 game in Las Vegas, a developing situation that threatens to thin out a passing attack that has otherwise kept pace with the league’s other unbeaten teams. The sources do not specify return timelines for either player, so the full impact on Kansas City’s offense remains unclear heading into the back half of October.

A 4-0 record with an intact depth chart is one thing. A 4-0 record that now has to replace two pass-catchers in the same game is a different proposition, and it is the clearest reason the Chiefs’ version of unbeaten looks shakier than San Francisco’s.

The Counterpoint: Four Games Is A Small Sample

The fairest pushback to ranking these unbeaten starts is that four games is a small window, and raw record does not always match underlying performance. The Chicago Bears are not undefeated, but they lead the NFL in total yards, first downs and time of possession, and they have the league’s best rushing offense at 785 yards through four weeks, per azcentral.com. Chicago has done that without quarterback Caleb Williams for a stretch after a hamstring injury, a run that included a 59-point outburst.

Bears coach Ben Johnson credited the depth of his roster, saying, “It’s the cliché, next man up, certainly, but our guys, we know we have a lot of talent throughout this roster, from the front to the back end. And so we always know we’re going to have a chance each and every week.”

That is the counterargument to reading too much into 4-0 records: Chicago’s statistical profile arguably rivals the unbeaten clubs, yet one loss keeps the Bears out of the conversation entirely. Record and performance do not always align this early, and the same logic cuts against overrating Minnesota’s offense-optional path to 4-0.

Other Contenders Lurking Behind The Unbeaten Group

Several one-loss teams have cases that complicate the picture. The Baltimore Ravens sit in a first-place tie atop the AFC North despite quarterback Lamar Jackson being day-to-day with an ankle injury and an offensive line now down to its No. 4 center option, Olaivavega Ioane, and third-string right guard, Emery Jones Jr. Ravens coach Jesse Minter said, “We’re not going to make excuses. We’re going to figure out the guys that we have and put them out there and give ourselves the best chance to be successful.”

New England’s Drake Maye turned in his best performance of the season in an upset win at Buffalo, pushing the Patriots’ offensive point total for the day to 29, matching their aggregate scoring entering Week 4, according to NBC Sports. Maye also leads the league with nine turnovers, a red flag even as coach Mike Vrabel called the Patriots “back in the race.” New England’s turnaround follows a blowout win over the Raiders in Week 3.

At the bottom, five teams remain winless through four weeks: the Los Angeles Chargers, Houston Texans, Miami Dolphins, Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Tennessee Titans. The Texans finally snapped into the win column with a victory in their own matchup against the Titans, detailed in Total Apex’s recap of the Texans’ 26-3 win, though that result came after the 0-4 tally cited in the power rankings.

What To Watch Going Forward

The next month will test which unbeaten start was real. San Francisco’s zero-sack offensive line and wins over playoff-caliber competition give it the best foundation of the three, but the Juszczyk injury is worth tracking. Minnesota’s margins need to widen against stronger competition than Miami’s 11.5-point-per-game attack. Kansas City now needs its passing game to function without two contributors who were on the field in Week 4.

Beyond the unbeaten tier, Baltimore’s offensive line attrition and Jackson’s ankle status bear watching, as does whether New England’s turnover rate under Maye catches up with its results. The next wave of power rankings and game results will show whether any of the 4-0 teams can turn an undefeated start into the kind of complete season San Francisco’s history under Shanahan suggests is possible.
