New Orleans Saints Urged to Pursue Blockbuster Trade After Bryan Bresee Injury
The New Orleans Saints suffered a major blow when defensive tackle Bryan Bresee went down with a season-ending ACL injury, and one analyst believes the solution could be a blockbuster trade for disgruntled Tampa Bay Buccaneers star Vita Vea.
While a deal remains purely speculative, the logic is easy to understand.
Bresee was expected to be one of the anchors of New Orleans’ defense in 2026 after establishing himself as a reliable starter over the past two seasons. His loss leaves a significant hole in the middle of the defensive line and creates a pressing need for reinforcements on a team that suddenly has legitimate playoff aspirations.
New Orleans Saints Have A Major Void
The Saints were counting on Bresee to take another step forward this season. After breaking into the starting lineup in 2024, the former Clemson standout developed into a productive interior defender. He followed a 7.5-sack campaign in 2024 with another strong season in 2025, showing growth as both a run defender and pass rusher.
Losing a player of that caliber is difficult enough under any circumstance. It’s even more damaging for a New Orleans team that believes it can compete for the NFC South title behind second-year quarterback Tyler Shough.
Why Vita Vea Makes Sense
If the Saints decide to aggressively address the position, few players would offer a bigger upgrade than Vita Vea.
The two-time Pro Bowler has been one of the NFL’s premier interior defensive linemen for years and remains one of the league’s best run defenders. Even entering his age-31 season, Vea continues to play at a high level and remains a disruptive force in the middle of opposing offenses.
Last season, he recorded 4.5 sacks, seven tackles for loss, and 13 quarterback hits while continuing to command double teams. Simply put, players like Vea rarely become available.
The Biggest Obstacle: Tampa Bay
Here’s where the idea becomes complicated. Reports have indicated that Vea is seeking a new contract and has requested a trade. However, the Buccaneers would have to be willing to move him, and more importantly, they’d have to be willing to move him to a division rival.
That’s what makes this scenario difficult to envision.
The Saints and Buccaneers are competing for the same division title. Trading one of the NFL’s best defensive tackles to a direct rival would be a tough sell for Tampa Bay’s front office, regardless of the compensation involved.
Intradivision trades involving star players are uncommon for a reason.
Saints Should Explore Every Option
Even if Vea ultimately proves unrealistic, Bresee’s injury changes the equation for New Orleans.
The Saints are no longer simply dealing with a depth concern. They’ve lost one of their projected starters and a key piece of their defensive front.
With Tyler Shough still on a rookie contract and optimism growing around the offense, there’s an argument that New Orleans should be aggressive.
Those rookie-quarterback windows don’t stay open forever.
A Move Worth Monitoring
For now, the Saints-Vita Vea connection remains more of a proposed solution than an active rumor.
Still, the fit is obvious.
New Orleans suddenly has an opening at defensive tackle. Vea is one of the best players at the position and reportedly wants a new situation. Put those two facts together and it’s easy to see why some are connecting the dots.
Whether Tampa Bay would ever help a division rival remains the biggest question.
But after losing Bryan Bresee for the season, the Saints may need to think bigger than they originally planned, and few available names would be bigger than Vita Vea.
