The complete story
The Jazz franchise began in 1974 as the New Orleans Jazz, an NBA expansion team built briefly around Hall of Famer Pete Maravich, before financial struggles forced a relocation to Salt Lake City in 1979, where the team kept the Jazz name. Under coach Jerry Sloan, the franchise became one of the league's model organizations, with Hall of Famers John Stockton and Karl Malone leading Utah to back-to-back NBA Finals in 1997 and 1998, losing both times to Michael Jordan's Chicago Bulls. The Jazz have never won an NBA title but have remained one of the league's most stable franchises, long owned by the Miller family before a 2020 sale to Qualtrics co-founder Ryan Smith. After a rebuild following Donovan Mitchell's 2023 departure, the front office - now overseen by CEO of Basketball Operations Danny Ainge - made a bold mid-season swing in February 2026, trading for All-Defensive forward Jaren Jackson Jr. The team plays at Delta Center in downtown Salt Lake City.
