The complete story
The Nuggets trace their roots to the 1967 ABA expansion franchise the Denver Rockets, renamed the Nuggets in 1974 and absorbed into the NBA in the 1976 ABA-NBA merger along with the Spurs, Pacers, and Nets. After decades of playoff near-misses behind stars like Alex English, Dan Issel, David Thompson, and later Carmelo Anthony, the franchise broke through under Nikola Jokic, winning its first NBA championship in 2023 by defeating the Miami Heat 4-1. The team plays home games at Ball Arena (formerly Pepsi Center) in downtown Denver and maintains a notable rivalry with the Minnesota Timberwolves and historically with the Utah Jazz as Northwest Division foes. Denver's high altitude has long been cited as a competitive factor against visiting teams. Ownership rests with the Kroenke family (Ann Walton Kroenke/Josh Kroenke) through Kroenke Sports & Entertainment, which also owns the NHL's Avalanche and NFL's Rams.
