The complete story
The Thunder's lineage began in 1967 as the Seattle SuperSonics, an NBA expansion franchise that reached three NBA Finals in Seattle, winning the 1979 championship over the Washington Bullets behind Hall of Famers Jack Sikma, Gus Williams, and Dennis Johnson. After financial disputes over a new Seattle arena, owner Clay Bennett's group relocated the franchise to Oklahoma City in 2008, renaming it the Thunder. Built around top draft picks Kevin Durant, Russell Westbrook, and James Harden, OKC reached the 2012 NBA Finals before losing to Miami, then rebuilt around Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, Chet Holmgren, and Jalen Williams under GM Sam Presti's extensive draft-asset strategy. That rebuild culminated in the 2025 NBA championship, a 4-3 Finals win over the Indiana Pacers, giving the SuperSonics/Thunder franchise its second title overall. The team plays at Paycom Center in downtown Oklahoma City and maintains a budding rivalry with the San Antonio Spurs, who eliminated the defending champions in the 2026 Western Conference Finals.
