The name “Woodson” carries a special kind of magic in Ann Arbor. Decades after his father dominated the gridiron, a new Woodson is exploring a future with the Michigan Wolverines.

This past weekend, 2027 three-star safety Charles Woodson Jr. traveled to campus for a visit. Accompanied by his father, the young defensive back documented the trip on social media, sparking plenty of excitement among the Michigan fanbase. While the nostalgic appeal of a legacy recruit is strong, Woodson Jr. brings his own distinct talent to the table.

Michigan Wolverines Legend Charles Woodson

You cannot talk about Michigan football without mentioning Charles Woodson. He remains one of the most iconic figures in college sports history. During his time in Ann Arbor, Woodson earned two All-American selections and took home the Heisman Trophy as a defensive player. He helped lead the Wolverines to a national championship before embarking on a legendary, nine-time Pro Bowl career in the NFL.

Following in those footsteps is no easy task. However, Woodson Jr. seems to embrace the spotlight. Taking a visit to his father’s alma mater shows he is seriously considering the possibility of carrying on the family tradition in the Maize and Blue.

Carving His Own Path

While his father locked down wide receivers as a generational cornerback, Charles Woodson Jr. patrols the defensive backfield as a safety. He is currently a junior at Lake Nona High School in Orlando, Florida.

College programs are already taking notice of his potential. He holds offers from major Power Four schools, including Arkansas, Baylor, Florida State, Oregon, and Texas A&M. According to On3, he is a three-star recruit and the 63rd-ranked player in the state of Florida.

Scouting the Young Safety

When you put on the tape, Woodson Jr. shows flashes of his father’s elite football IQ. Andrew Ivins of 247Sports notes that the young safety boasts excellent awareness in both zone and man coverage.

He darts forward with clear conviction in run support and takes sound angles to the football. While he currently lacks elite size and will need to add some mass before hitting the college ranks, his ability to process the game on the back end makes him an intriguing prospect. He even shows big-play ability in the return game, a trait Michigan fans know all too well.

What This Means for Michigan’s 2027 Class

Michigan has been laying the groundwork with Woodson Jr. for quite some time. The coaching staff officially offered him a scholarship back in June 2025 and hosted him for an unofficial visit later that October.

Currently, the Wolverines have five hard commits for the class of 2027. They already secured one talented player in the secondary, landing four-star safety Darrell Mattison out of Chicago last month.

Adding Woodson Jr. to the mix would give the Wolverines a massive boost. Not only does it secure a high-IQ safety with undeniable bloodlines, but it also gives Michigan a crucial recruiting footprint in the talent-rich state of Florida. He would be the first player from the Sunshine State to join Michigan’s 2027 class.

The recruitment process is far from over. However, keeping the Woodson name tied to the Michigan program is a clear priority for the coaching staff. Fans will undoubtedly keep a close eye on this legacy prospect as he makes his final college decision.
