Diary of a Yankees Fan #14: End-of-Season Press Conference Makes No Sense

Diary of a Yankees Fan: Brian Cashman, Hal Steinbrenner, and Aaron Boone finally had their end-of-season press conference on Oct. 21. They had heard the complaints of fans and did not blame the problems on injuries. The fans did not want to hear those excuses. Instead, the general manager and the managing partner said that the failures of the season were the result of the players not performing. Who acquired those players?

The inconsistency was noteworthy. General Manager Brian Cashman blamed player nonperformance for the failure on the field. Not only did he acquire the players, but he was praised for the success of the team. They had great pitching and won 93 games. It is true that Cashman also acquired the players who achieved those things, but he acquired all of the players and cannot have it both ways. Can you believe Cashman and Boone will be back?

Diary of a Yankees Fan #14: The Postseason Press Conference

Diary of a Yankees fan this is insanity

The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and expecting a different result. Diary of a Yankees Fan: The Yankees are insane. They ‘ran it back’ and did basically the same thing in 2026 as in 2025. They did not win the World Series, thereby accomplishing their stated goal. What did they say during the Press Conference? A lot; here is a summary.

Let’s begin with manager Aaron Boone, the target of significant ire from Yankee fans. Boone has been a frequent subject of these Diary of a Yankees fan columns. Hal Steinbrenner said there has been no talk of a contract extension with Boone. There is not much to read into this, as it is normal operating procedure for the team. Steinbrenner did say, “I thought Boone managed a good season, especially with the pitching staff,” Steinbrenner said. “He got us to the playoffs, and the bottom line is, the players didn’t live up to their end of the bargain in the playoffs. So I thought he had a good season.”

An inanimate object could have managed that pitching staff well; the real question is how, in this world, this team did not make the World Series. As far as Cashman goes, Steinbrenner expressed significant confidence. This is a very mind-boggling diary of a Yankees fan, and consistent with the past. He said, “Cash is great every season. I think the roster he put together and the team we rolled out of spring training with was as good as any in baseball, in my opinion. We had a lot of bumps and bruises along the way, but the team was fantastic. It was a World Series-caliber team.”

Former Players Calling the Team Out

Brian Cashman answered the question about former players calling the team out. This was the subject of another diary of a Yankees fan article. Cashman said he had productive conversations with all of those players. He said, “The dialogue is good. I’ll always have that dialogue. My conversations were good, strong, healthy, but also agreeing with members on the calls that these may be things on the margins, but not necessarily something that actually impacts the outcome of the game when it comes to pitcher versus hitter, converting balls on defense, baserunning; those issues aren’t why we’re losing those games. They’re not affecting our aspect of our game.”

One must wonder, diary of a Yankees fan, why they were losing those games. After watching and writing about all those games, one can say those marginal things DID cost the Yankees games. This was particularly the case in one-run, low-scoring games. The team played several of those because they could not score.

Conclusion: Judge and Stanton Injury Issues

Although fans did not want to hear it, Steinbrenner did allude to the Judge and Stanton injuries being significant. The proverbial elephant in the room, diary of a Yankees fan. He said, “We had some serious setbacks. The team we left spring training with, I believed, had a very good chance of winning a championship. It was a tremendous team, a well put together team, a fairly balanced team. You lose two big right-handed bats; that’s a lot of home runs. That hurt us. Some might see that as making excuses, but it’s a fact. It certainly didn’t make the mission any easier.” He also said he was not upset about Judge’s comments urging the ownership to go all in.
