The Carolina Panthers ended last year on a high note. After starting out the season poorly, the team started to show some promise in the back half of the season. Bryce Young started to live up to the expectations of a number one overall pick. Even the defense started to show signs of life. As the league’s new year begins, they have locked down another young player. The Panthers have signed CB Jaycee Horn to a record-breaking extension.
Carolina Panthers Sign Jaycee Horn To Extension
ESPN’s Adam Schefter reports the extension is a four-year, $100 million extension with $70 million guaranteed. The annual salary of $25 million per year makes Jaycee Horn the highest-paid defensive back in NFL history. The Carolina Panthers took the son of NFL legend Joe Horn eighth overall in the 2021 NFL Draft. When he has been on the field, he has played well. In four years, he has had 153 total tackles and five interceptions.
The problem has been staying on the field. He has never played all 17 games in a season. Last season’s 15 games played was the most in his career. In his rookie season, he only played in three games, and in his third year, he only played six. This may seem like a risk, but injuries are notoriously volatile. We’ve seen many players struggle with injuries and then never have any problems for the rest of their careers.
2025 Outlook
The Carolina Panthers have locked down two of the most important positions. The quarterback and the cornerback are two of the most important positions in football. If they can continue to develop this core, they could compete in the NFC South very soon. They are in one of the easiest divisions in football, and if they could continue to develop their young talent, there is a path forward to be frisky in the NFC.
Did the Carolina Panthers make the right move, or will they regret giving him this money?
