Atlanta Falcons Expected To Keep Quarterback Kirk Cousins Past March 16

Atlanta Falcons

The Atlanta Falcons are expected to keep Quarterback Kirk Cousins through the week which leaves them on the hook for $10 million. Cousins is due that sum if he is on Atlanta’s roster on March 17. Many around the league expected the veteran to be released or traded before he was due the roster bonus. Falcons management has said at times this offseason they are comfortable with keeping Cousins as the team’s backup quarterback in 2025.

Cousins signed a 4-year $180 million contract with the Atlanta Falcons last offseason. His first season with the team did not go well. He started the regular season well but faltered down the stretch of the year. He had 1 touchdown and 9 interceptions over his final four starts. His poor performance led to the team benching him for rookie Quarterback Michael Penix Jr. He will be the team’s starting quarterback next season. How will the situation between Cousins and the Atlanta Falcons resolve itself?

Atlanta Falcons Offseason Outlook

Atlanta is coming off a disappointing regular season. One of the main reasons was Cousins faltering late in the season. The Falcons have responded to that this offseason by strengthening its defense. They signed Defensive End Leonard Floyd, Linebacker Divine Deablo, and Cornerback Mike Ford.

Penix Jr. will have at his disposal some of the best skill position players in the league. Running Back Bijan Robinson, Wide Receiver Drake London, and Tight End Kyle Pitts will help make the young quarterback’s first year starting easier.

Final Thoughts

Even though Cousins may be on the Atlanta Falcons longer than many expected, it is hard to imagine he will remain on the team’s roster when the regular season begins. Cousins should be either released or traded over the next five months. A few good landing spots for the veteran QB are the New York Giants and Cleveland Browns. He will seek to prove his poor month of football leading to his benching was a fluke.
