Tarik Skubal declined to discuss his pending free agency after watching the Los Angeles Dodgers get eliminated by the Milwaukee Brewers in Game 4 of the NLCS on Thursday night. The left-hander, who will headline this winter’s free agent class, said he wasn’t ready to look ahead so soon after his team’s season ended.
“I’m not going to comment on my future really at all. Today sucks, you know, and that’s kind of where my head’s at,” Skubal said, according to CBS Sports.
Skubal’s Guarded Response On Tarik Skubal Free Agency
Skubal’s comments came just minutes after the final out of a season that began with him pitching for the Detroit Tigers and ended with him watching Los Angeles fall short of a World Series three-peat. The 29-year-old gave no indication of what he’s looking for in his next contract or which teams might factor into his decision.
That silence lines up with how little is actually settled around his free agency. The league’s collective bargaining agreement is set to expire, and team owners have pushed for a salary cap, a dynamic that could shape both the timing and structure of any deal a pitcher of Skubal’s caliber signs this winter.
What It Means For Skubal’s Next Contract
Under normal circumstances, a pitcher with Skubal’s resume would be expected to command a mid-nine-figure contract once he hits the open market. He won the American League Cy Young Award in both 2024 and 2025, and his performance this postseason reinforced that track record.
Skubal has posted a 2.13 ERA across eight career playoff starts spanning three consecutive postseason appearances with his teams. In 2026 alone, combined between Detroit and Los Angeles, he made 26 starts and went 12-7 with a 2.72 ERA, a 0.96 WHIP and 186 strikeouts in 158⅔ innings, good for 4.6 WAR.
Those numbers came despite a midseason interruption. Skubal underwent NanoScope surgery on his pitching elbow in 2026 and missed starts between April 29 and June 13 before returning to form.
How Skubal Ended Up With The Dodgers
The Tigers traded Skubal to the Dodgers at the Aug. 2 deadline in a package that included top prospect Zyhir Hope, according to CBS Sports. The move put him on a Dodgers roster built for a championship run, and he delivered in October, tossing a six-inning gem in the NLDS before later taking the mound to open the NLCS.
Acquired just three months before the playoffs began, Skubal now finds himself at the center of a decision that will test the Dodgers’ willingness to spend. The organization has not always retained big-ticket free agents it landed at the trade deadline, a list that includes Manny Machado, Max Scherzer, Corey Seager and Trea Turner, according to Sporting News. Even so, a return to Los Angeles is considered the most likely outcome for Skubal, per the outlet.
What The Tigers And Dodgers Must Weigh
For the Dodgers, any pursuit of Skubal comes with payroll complications. Los Angeles already carries the highest payroll obligations in baseball for 2027, projected at $370.5 million, a figure driven in part by Kyle Tucker’s contract, which will cost the team $55 million that season, according to Sporting News. Adding Skubal’s next deal would force the front office to decide whether to push past $400 million in total payroll for 2027, before even factoring in luxury tax penalties.
For the Tigers, the trade that sent Skubal away in August already closed that chapter, leaving Detroit to build its rotation without the two-time Cy Young winner it drafted and developed.
What’s Next
Skubal is set to become the top free agent available once the offseason formally begins, though no timeline has emerged for when he might sign or when CBA negotiations between players and owners will conclude. Those talks, along with the uncertainty over a potential salary cap, are likely to influence how quickly his market develops.
