Penta’s Money in the Bank cash-in is now the biggest open question hanging over WWE‘s championship picture. The luchador won the men’s ladder match Saturday at the Smoothie King Center in New Orleans, pulling a briefcase down that grants him the right to challenge for a world title at a time of his choosing. History says the odds favor him: 20 of the 26 men’s cash-in attempts in Money in the Bank history have succeeded, according to ESPN. That track record alone puts every champion on notice.

How Penta Won The Briefcase

Penta beat five other men to claim the 2026 briefcase: Bron Breakker, Je’Von Evans, Kevin Owens, CM Punk and Trick Williams. The finish came when Penta hit Breakker with a Mexican Destroyer off one ladder down onto a second ladder below, according to Bleacher Report. The move capped a run that started weeks earlier, when Penta won qualifying triple threat matches over Dominik Mysterio and Dragon Lee to earn his spot in the ladder match.

This marked Penta’s second trip to Money in the Bank. He also competed in the 2025 edition without winning, which makes this year’s victory his first time actually holding the briefcase.

The Reigns Connection Looms Large

Penta’s path to the briefcase runs directly through Roman Reigns. The two met for the World Heavyweight Championship on Raw in Mexico City on Sept. 14, with Reigns winning that match. Penta now holds the one asset that can force a rematch on his own terms. Money in the Bank gives its holder the ability to dictate when a title match happens, often catching a champion at his most vulnerable, whether that is moments after a grueling defense or in the middle of an unrelated feud.

That history with Reigns gives WWE a built-in storyline if Penta decides to point the briefcase at the World Heavyweight Championship. A loss in September does not disqualify him from a rematch opportunity. If anything, it hands the creative team a revenge angle that needs no new setup.

A Crowded Field Of Contenders Raises The Stakes

Penta’s win stands out partly because of who he beat to get it. CM Punk, Kevin Owens, Bron Breakker, Je’Von Evans and Trick Williams all entered the match hoping to use it as a launching pad into world title contention. Punk in particular has been positioned as a championship-level threat throughout his current WWE run, and his presence alongside Owens, who has been locked in his own rivalry that played out at Money in the Bank, signals how deep the main event picture has become.

Penta emerging from that group matters because it was not a two-man race. Beating five wrestlers who each had a case for the win gives his victory more weight and suggests WWE views him as a legitimate piece of the title conversation, not a surprise winner plucked from the midcard.

The Counterpoint: Timing Still Favors Patience

None of this means Penta cashes in soon. Briefcase holders have historically waited for the right spot, sometimes months, to maximize the moment and the odds of success. Nothing in the record of this match indicates a timeline for Penta, and WWE has shown in past years that holding the briefcase for an extended stretch can build more drama than a quick cash-in. The 17th edition of Money in the Bank, which traces its roots to a 2005 debut at WrestleMania 21, has produced plenty of holders who sat on their opportunity before striking.

What To Watch Next

The open question now is which title Penta eventually targets and when he decides to act. His recent history with Reigns makes the World Heavyweight Championship the most obvious target, but nothing confirms that plan. WWE’s championship scene already includes Punk, Owens and Breakker jockeying for position, and Penta’s briefcase gives him leverage over all of it. The next marker to watch is any televised appearance where Penta addresses his plans, along with the status of whichever champion he eventually confronts.
