- 2026 regular-season total dead cap of roughly $185M is extremely high relative to total cap (~$302M); this stems from a large wave of veteran releases/trades in the 2026 offseason (Tagovailoa, Hill, Waddle, Chubb, etc.) but the magnitude should be cross-checked against a second cap source.
- Team was in the midst of a full rebuild (0-5 start) with QB Tua Tagovailoa released and replaced by Malik Willis; some mid-season roster/cap figures may shift quickly.

The complete story
Founded in 1965 by attorney Joe Robbie and actor Danny Thomas, the Dolphins began play in the AFL in 1966 and joined the NFL via the 1970 merger. Under head coach Don Shula, Miami completed the NFL's only perfect season in 1972 (17-0), anchored by the famous 'No-Name Defense,' and went on to win back-to-back Super Bowls (VII and VIII). The team has played at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens since 1987 and holds longstanding rivalries with the Bills, Jets, and Patriots within the AFC East.
