The 2027 NFL draft order outlook through Week 8 is taking shape around three losing teams and one aggressive front office willing to buy future picks in bulk. The Los Angeles Chargers, at 0-7, hold the top projected slot. The Tennessee Titans, at 1-6, sit second.
The Miami Dolphins round out the top three. Behind them, the New York Jets have built a draft war chest that includes the projected fourth, fifth and 10th overall picks, a haul that stems directly from a trade executed by the Indianapolis Colts.
None of this is final. Draft order projections shift every week as records change and teams make in-season trades. But the current picture, built from Week 8 standings and recent deadline deals, gives a clear early read on which franchises are positioned to add premier young talent in 2027.
Chargers’ Winless Start Puts Them On Top
Los Angeles enters the projection at 0-7, the league’s only winless team, and that record currently places the Chargers at the top of the 2027 draft order outlook. A team with zero wins through seven games typically controls its own draft fate for the rest of the season, since every additional loss only strengthens its position for the top selection.
The prize at the top of the board is Ohio State wide receiver Jeremiah Smith, who is projected as the No. 1 overall pick and rated as the top prospect available. For a Chargers team searching for difference-making skill talent, the pairing of the league’s worst record with the draft’s top-rated player is the central storyline of this year’s order.
Titans Hold Two First-Round Picks After Simmons Trade
Tennessee sits second in the projected order at 1-6, but the Titans’ situation carries an added wrinkle. After trading defensive lineman Jeffery Simmons to the Chicago Bears, Tennessee now owns two first-round selections in 2027. That gives the Titans two bites at a draft class that includes Notre Dame cornerback Leonard Moore, projected second overall, and Oklahoma State quarterback Drew Mestemaker, projected third.
Mestemaker has thrown for 2,649 yards and 25 touchdowns this season, ranking second in FBS passing yards and tied for second in touchdown passes. A rebuilding Titans roster with two first-round picks and a top-three quarterback prospect on the board gives Tennessee more flexibility than almost any other team near the top of the order.
Dolphins And Jets Round Out The Early Top Five
Miami is projected third overall, giving the Dolphins a realistic shot at one of the draft’s top three prospects depending on how the rest of the season plays out. The Jets, meanwhile, are the most unusual story in this year’s projected order. New York owns the fourth, fifth and 10th overall selections, a stockpile built in part by the Colts’ decision to send their own first-round pick to New York.
Indianapolis enters the week at 2-5, and the pick the Colts would have kept now belongs to the Jets at fourth overall. Having three selections inside the top 12 would let New York address multiple roster needs in a single draft class, including adding a player such as Indiana wide receiver Charlie Becker, who has posted 875 receiving yards and nine touchdowns this season and is considered a top-10 prospect.
Colts And Seahawks Trades Reshaped The Board
The current top-10 picture was not built on records alone. Two trades at the deadline moved real draft capital. Indianapolis fired general manager Chris Ballard and then sent defensive tackle DeForest Buckner to the San Francisco 49ers for a 2027 fourth-round pick, a sign the Colts are treating this season as a teardown rather than a playoff push.
Seattle, by contrast, went the other direction. The Seahawks, at 4-3 and two games behind the 49ers in the NFC West, traded a 2027 third-round pick and a 2028 fifth-round pick to the Colts for All-Pro guard Quenton Nelson. That deal signals Seattle views itself as a contender willing to spend future draft capital now, even as Indianapolis treats the same draft class as the centerpiece of its rebuild.
The Counterpoint: Needs May Not Match The Board
Not every team near the top of the order is guaranteed to take the best player on the board. Several clubs projected in the top 10 have bigger positional needs than the top-rated prospects available at their slot might address, according to CBS Sports‘ mock draft analysis. That mismatch between team needs and prospect rankings creates an opening for trade-down scenarios, where a team picking high could deal its selection to a club further down the order in exchange for additional picks. If that happens with any of the top-five teams discussed here, it would scramble the order further before the actual draft arrives.
What To Watch
The 2027 draft order outlook will keep moving every week as records change and more teams make in-season trades. The Chargers need wins to shake loose from the top slot, while the Titans’ two first-round picks make them a team to watch for additional draft-day trades. The Colts’ sale of veteran talent suggests more moves could follow before the season ends, and the Jets’ stockpile of three top-12 selections will be worth tracking as the strength of their remaining schedule becomes clearer. The next meaningful shift in the order will come as Week 9 results are finalized.
