The New York Jets have continued their aggressive approach to the 2026 free agency period by securing a significant piece for their secondary. The team has reportedly agreed to terms with cornerback Nahshon Wright on a one-year contract worth up to $5.5 million. This move brings a proven ballhawk to a defensive unit that has been actively looking to create more turnovers.

New York Jets Sign Nahshon Wright After Career Year

Wright joins the Jets following a career-best season with the Chicago Bears. In 2025, the 27-year-old had a breakout performance, earning his first Pro Bowl selection. He started 16 of the 17 games he played and demonstrated a remarkable ability to take the ball away, finishing the season with five interceptions.

To put that number in perspective, Wright’s five interceptions were tied for second-most in the NFL and were five more than the entire Jets team recorded during the 2025 season. Beyond his interceptions, he was a productive and disruptive force, logging 80 total tackles, 11 passes defensed, two forced fumbles, and three fumble recoveries. This signing directly addresses a major area of need for the Jets’ defense.

Wright’s Path to New York

Wright’s journey to the Jets has seen him play for multiple organizations, giving him a range of experience. Originally a third-round draft pick by the Dallas Cowboys in 2021, he spent his first three seasons there. He then had a stint with the Minnesota Vikings in 2024 before landing with the Bears for his Pro Bowl campaign in 2025.

His development into a premier playmaker makes him an intriguing addition for New York. Having demonstrated his peak performance, Wright now brings his well-traveled experience and recently honed skills to a Jets defense looking to make a leap forward.

Addressing a Defensive Need

The Jets’ front office has made it clear that adding players with a history of creating turnovers is a top priority. The acquisition of Wright fits this strategy perfectly. After trading away Sauce Gardner, the team had a significant void at the cornerback position. Wright provides an immediate, veteran solution with a proven talent for disrupting opposing passing attacks.

His signing is part of a larger defensive overhaul that has seen the Jets bring in multiple players known for their ball skills. By adding a player of Wright’s caliber, the Jets not only improve their cornerback depth but also introduce a dynamic element to their secondary that was missing last season. The one-year deal offers the Jets a high-upside player without a long-term financial commitment, providing flexibility while immediately upgrading the defense.
