Jets vs Red Wings brings two winless teams together Sunday at Little Caesars Arena, with Winnipeg coming off a 4-3 overtime loss to Boston and Detroit trying to find its first goal of the season. Puck drop is set for 1 p.m. EDT.

Jets vs Red Wings game information

  • Date: Sunday, Oct. 4
  • Time: 1 p.m. EDT
  • Venue: Little Caesars Arena, Detroit
  • TV: NHL Network, DSN (U.S.); TSN3 (Canada)
  • Probable goalies: Stuart Skinner (Winnipeg), John Gibson (Detroit)

How did the Jets open their season?

Winnipeg led 3-2 after two periods against Boston on Friday, with goals from Kyle Connor, Dylan DeMelo and Mario Ferraro. Elias Lindholm tied it with 1:38 left in regulation, and JJ Peterka won it at 3:21 of overtime, as NHL.com reported. Our JJ Peterka overtime goal story has the full recap.

Skinner made 26 saves in his Jets debut. Winnipeg also is without Connor Hellebuyck, who was suspended Sept. 17 for failing to report to training camp. No return date has been set.

What is wrong with the Red Wings offense?

Detroit lost its opener 2-0 to the New York Rangers, who got a first career shutout from goalie Dylan Garand. Garand’s shutout left the Red Wings with no goals and no points.

The lineup is thin. Center Dylan Larkin is out with an upper-body injury, and his injury timeline points to a return around Oct. 6. Defenseman Simon Edvinsson remains unsigned amid a contract dispute and is in Sweden with no return date.

Key matchup: Skinner’s debut form vs Detroit’s search for goals

The Jets showed they can score, putting three goals past Boston, but they still gave up four. Winnipeg needs a tighter defensive effort in front of Skinner.

Detroit has the opposite problem. Gibson played well in the opener, but the Red Wings could not solve Garand. Another quiet night would leave them 0-2.

What is next?

Winnipeg plays Pittsburgh on Monday in a back-to-back set. The Jets also have injured players Walker Duehr (target return Oct. 17) and Elias Salomonsson (Oct. 15) on the injured list.
