Dylan Garand’s first NHL shutout carried the New York Rangers to a 2-0 win over the Detroit Red Wings on Friday at Little Caesars Arena in Detroit. Garand made 22 saves in his fourth career game, NHL.com reported.
Sean Durzi scored on the power play at 5:12 of the first period, his first goal with New York, and it held up as the winner. Eeli Tolvanen added an empty-net goal with 1:16 left. John Gibson stopped 19 shots for Detroit.
Garand shutout caps a wild week
Garand said he was waived Sunday, cleared Monday and went to Hartford before the Rangers called him back up. He then started on the second night of a back-to-back, one night after New York’s 5-1 home win over Tampa Bay, which we covered in our Rangers-Lightning recap.
Garand went 2-0-1 in three games late last season. The Rangers are 2-1-0 and have won two straight.
Detroit opens shorthanded and frustrated
The Red Wings played without forward Dylan Larkin, who has asked for a trade and is on injured reserve with an upper-body injury. Defenseman Simon Edvinsson also missed the game while his contract talks remain stalled. Our Dylan Larkin injury report has more.
Larkin was booed during pregame introductions, and some fans chanted “Sell the team!” at owner Chris Ilitch, ABC News reported. Read our Rangers vs. Red Wings preview for the opening-night context.
Garand’s shutout came on a night when New York went 1-for-4 on the power play, while Detroit was 0-for-2.
What’s next
The Rangers host Utah on Sunday. Detroit hosts Winnipeg the same day.
