Green Bay Packers defensive tackle Javon Hargrave will miss the rest of the season with a torn Achilles. The injury is the second season-ending Achilles tear on the Packers defense in as many weeks after linebacker Edgerrin Cooper went down with the same injury.
Hargrave, a two-time Pro Bowler in 2021 and 2023, signed a two-year, $23 million deal with Green Bay this offseason. He played nearly every defensive snap for the Packers this season before going down, per ESPN.
What The Packers Said About The Hargrave Injury
Packers coach Matt LaFleur addressed the loss of Hargrave, calling him both a talented player and a well-liked teammate. “That kind of takes the air out of the room a little bit, when you lose … not only a great player but a great guy, a key piece to this team, and it kind of puts a little bit of a cloud on the day,” LaFleur said, according to CBS Sports.
Hargrave’s season-ending designation is official.
Who Steps Up On Green Bay’s Defensive Line
Hargrave’s injury is the third to hit the Packers’ defensive line room this season. Warren Brinson remains on injured reserve with a calf and groin issue, and Jordon Riley is still on the physically unable to perform list as he recovers from his own Achilles injury. Anthony Campbell also missed Week 5 with an ankle injury.
The healthy defensive linemen are Karl Brooks, Chris McClellan, Jonathan Ford and Devonte Wyatt, not counting edge rushers.
The Packers brought in Hargrave specifically because their defensive line struggled down the stretch last season. His near-full snap count through five games this year reflected how central he had become to the interior rotation before the injury.
Green Bay sits at 3-2 this season, according to Sporting News. Losing both Hargrave and Cooper to Achilles tears within a week of each other has stripped the defense of two key starters heading into the back half of the schedule.
What’s Next
The Packers face the Dallas Cowboys on Sunday Night Football in Week 6. With Hargrave and Cooper both out, Green Bay will pursue options to address the defensive line before the Nov. 10 trade deadline.
