The Indianapolis Colts had an up-and-down season in 2024. There were plenty of good things. Jonathan Taylor returned to form after a year of contract disputes and injuries. Laiatu Latu had a solid rookie season, setting the foundation to be one of the best young pass rushers in the game. It wasn’t all great. The defense was abysmal, and quarterback Anthony Richardson failed to show the type of improvement they were hoping for. The team is bringing in some reinforcements at the quarterback position, signing former Giants quarterback Daniel Jones.

ESPN’s Adam Schefter reports it is a one-year deal worth up to $14 million. Daniel Jones has been one of the most talked-about players in the NFL over the past few seasons. After signing a huge extension with the Giants, he failed to live up to expectations. The team cut him, and he ended up with the Minnesota Vikings, backing up Sam Darnold. The Indianapolis Colts are taking a chance on him with the one-year deal.

This may signal that the team is not completely sold on Anthony Richardson. The biggest issue is his completion percentage. His long passes are a thing of beauty, but he often struggles to complete 50% of his passes. In today’s NFL, that cannot happen. If Richardson continues to struggle, the team could see what Jones has to offer.

2025 Outlook

The Indianapolis Colts will have their hands full in 2025. The Houston Texans have been reloading their roster, making many moves to try to maximize CJ Stroud’s rookie contract. Jacksonville has been making moves as well, trying to get their defense back to a respectable level. Brian Thomas Jr. had one of the best rookie seasons in franchise history, and Trevor Lawrence will hopefully be back healthy.

The Indianapolis Colts are one of the most interesting teams heading into 2025. They could easily be one of the worst teams in the league or surprise many and compete for the AFC South. This is a good signing for the Colts. They are not committed to Jones long-term, and if it doesn’t work out, they can move on next year with no issues.
