The Houston Texans re-signed veteran Tight End Irv Smith Jr. to a one-year deal Friday evening. He was released by the Kansas City Chiefs midway through the 2024 season before coming to Houston for the second half of the year. Smith Jr. did not record any regular season stats but played in a handful of games. He had 2 receiving yards in the team’s AFC Divisional Round loss to the Kansas City Chiefs. Will the veteran tight end get back on track in 2025?
Houston Texans Offseason Summary
Smith Jr. returns to a Houston Texans offense that will look much different in 2025. They traded away their best offensive lineman Laremy Tunsil and lost Wide Receiver Stefon Diggs in free agency. They also acquired Wide Receiver Christian Kirk in March from the Jacksonville Jaguars.
Smith Jr. will look to provide stability to a receiving corps without Tank Dell for at least a majority of the 2025 season. The veteran tight end will be behind Dalton Schultz on the depth chart. Quarterback C.J. Stroud took a step back in his sophomore season. He will look to continue his upward trajectory this year.
Final Thoughts
Smith Jr. is a shrewd signing for the Houston Texans. He will look to bounce back from a disappointing last few seasons, with a team hungry for his services.
