Minnesota Vikings tight end T.J. Hockenson was ruled out in the first quarter of Sunday’s Week 5 game against the New Orleans Saints with a concussion. The injury added to a growing list of absences for a Vikings team that entered the day unbeaten at 4-0.

What The Team And Source Said

Hockenson was ruled out in the first quarter after the concussion, according to NFL.com.

The Vikings were already playing without left tackle Christian Darrisaw, who is dealing with a concussion of his own, and receiver Jordan Addison, sidelined by a hamstring injury. Hockenson’s exit meant Minnesota lost a third key offensive piece before halftime.

Impact On Minnesota’s Offense

The Vikings managed just six points in the first half and trailed the Saints 7-6 at the break. Hockenson’s absence played a role in that sluggish output, compounded by two penalties on Ryan Van Demark, who was filling in for Darrisaw at left tackle, and a fumble by running back Aaron Jones Sr.

Those combined setbacks hampered a Minnesota offense that had been rolling through its first four games of the season. Losing a reliable target like Hockenson over the middle removed a key option for the Vikings as they tried to establish rhythm without two other starters.

What’s Next

The Vikings beat New Orleans 23-13 to improve to 5-0. Hockenson’s return depends on clearing the concussion protocol.
