The Green Bay Packers face a serious depth issue along their defensive line. Following significant offseason roster shifts and unfortunate injuries, the team needs a reliable veteran to step up. CBS Sports analyst Garrett Podell recently suggested a perfect solution: signing eight-time Pro Bowl edge rusher Von Miller.
Green Bay Packers Urged To Add Von Miller
Green Bay recently traded star edge rusher Rashan Gary to the Dallas Cowboys. This trade leaves a massive void on the defensive front, as the team must find a way to replace the 7.5 sacks Gary produced last season.
To make matters more complicated, the defense expects to miss superstar linebacker Micah Parsons for up to four games. Parsons continues to recover from a torn ACL he suffered late last year. The Packers urgently need a capable veteran to anchor the edge opposite former first-round pick Lukas Van Ness while Parsons rehabs.
The Value of Veteran Experience
Von Miller brings an unmatched resume to the table. As a two-time Super Bowl champion and the NFL’s active leader in career sacks with 138.5, Miller knows exactly how to pressure opposing quarterbacks.
While signing a 37-year-old defensive lineman carries some risk, Miller proved his enduring value last season with the Washington Commanders. Despite playing only 37% of defensive snaps, he recorded 9.0 sacks and 36 pressures. He also played in every single game, showcasing remarkable durability for his age. CBS Sports Garrett Podell thinks this could be a great fit for Green Bay.
“Miller makes plenty of sense on the Packers, given Micah Parsons’ situation. Parsons is recovering from a torn ACL. Miller would be an ideal addition to hold down the fort at the edge rusher spot opposite former first-round pick Lukas Van Ness until Parsons gets back. Once he does, Miller could be a situational pass rusher for the Packers, a team whose +1500 odds to win the Super Bowl are the seventh-best in the NFL, according to DraftKings Sportsbook.
Even though Green Bay is known as a team that can be free agent-averse, general manager Brian Gutekunst signed veteran defensive tackle Javon Hargrave to hold down the fort until Devonte Wyatt can return from his injury. Miller would be a similar signing.”
Miller fits perfectly into Green Bay’s current defensive timeline. He can easily hold down a starting role early in the season. Once Parsons returns to full health, the coaching staff can shift Miller into a specialized, situational pass-rushing role. This strategic rotation keeps the veteran fresh for critical third downs and a potential late-season playoff push. By deploying him strictly in obvious passing situations, the team maximizes his elite pass-rushing traits while minimizing physical wear and tear.
A Smart Investment for a Contender
The Packers currently possess strong odds to compete for a Super Bowl this season. General Manager Brian Gutekunst recently showed a willingness to sign veteran stopgaps, highlighted by his acquisition of defensive tackle Javon Hargrave. Adding Von Miller would follow this exact, successful blueprint.
Securing a proven winner like Miller gives the defense immediate stability and elite production. As the front office looks to finalize the roster for a championship run, bringing this legendary pass rusher to Wisconsin stands out as a highly logical and impactful move.
