One NFL analyst believes the Green Bay Packers should think outside the box when it comes to their backup quarterback situation — and that means targeting Taysom Hill. In a recent report, Packers’ analyst Wendell Ferreira argued that Hill’s versatility, experience, and familiarity with Matt LaFleur’s system make him an ideal fit in Green Bay as both a depth option behind Jordan Love and a multipurpose offensive weapon.
Hill, now 35, is entering the final stages of his career, but his unique skill set still makes him one of the league’s most unconventional chess pieces.
Why Hill Makes Sense for the Green Bay Packers
The analyst pointed to several reasons the Packers should consider a reunion with Taysom Hill, who originally signed with Green Bay as an undrafted free agent in 2017 before being claimed by the Saints.
- Versatility — Hill can play quarterback, running back, tight end, special teams, and even serve as a short‑yardage hammer.
- System familiarity — His experience in Sean Payton’s offense translates well to LaFleur’s scheme, especially in red‑zone and misdirection packages.
- Backup stability — The Packers don’t have a proven veteran behind Jordan Love, and Hill’s presence would give them a reliable emergency option.
- Creative flexibility — LaFleur could deploy Hill in gadget looks, two‑QB sets, or special packages that stress defenses.
The idea isn’t that Hill would compete with Love — it’s that he would expand the playbook while providing insurance.
A Potential Reunion Years in the Making
Hill’s NFL journey actually began in Green Bay, even though he never played a regular‑season snap for the team. The Saints claimed him off waivers after the 2017 preseason, and he went on to become one of the most unique players in the league.
The analyst noted that a return to the Packers would be a full‑circle moment — and one that could benefit both sides. Green Bay gets a versatile veteran; Hill gets a defined role on a contender.
Would the Packers Actually Do It?
There’s no indication the Packers are pursuing Hill, but the logic is clear. Green Bay has leaned heavily into creativity on offense, and Hill is the definition of a creative weapon. He also wouldn’t cost much, making him a low‑risk, high‑utility signing.
The analyst’s argument boils down to this: if the Packers want a backup who can help even when he’s not under center, Hill is the best option available.
The Bottom Line
Taysom Hill isn’t a traditional quarterback, but that’s exactly why one analyst believes the Packers should go after him. His versatility, experience, and fit in LaFleur’s offense make him an intriguing option as both a backup and a gadget player.
If Green Bay wants to add another layer of unpredictability to its offense, Hill might be the most interesting name on the board.
