DaRon Bland Says He’s Ready to Be Himself Again as Cowboys Eye Defensive Bounce-Back

Daron Bland

The Dallas Cowboys received some encouraging news at training camp this week on former All-Pro cornerback DaRon Bland.

Bland returned as a full participant for the opening practice of training camp and made it clear afterward that his focus for 2026 is simple: get back to the player who established himself as one of the NFL’s premier ballhawks.

After battling foot injuries in each of the past two seasons, Bland believes he’s finally healthy enough to return to form.

“I feel pretty good, real good actually,” Bland told reporters. “I feel, right now, way better than I was the first time I had the surgery.”

For Dallas Cowboys fans, that’s exactly what they wanted to hear.

Injuries Have Kept DaRon Bland From Building on His Historic Season

DaRon Bland’s confidence stems from a much smoother recovery process than the one he experienced previously.

The veteran corner underwent surgery on his left foot in January after another injury-plagued campaign. While he spent much of OTAs and minicamp working with the rehab group, he’s now back practicing and says he has no physical limitations.

“We’re full go,” Bland said. “Full go. It’s limited reps, but full go.”

That’s significant because injuries have been the biggest obstacle standing between Bland and a return to elite production.

“It was very frustrating, because it was also my first ever injury,” Bland said. “And to be able to miss games like that, it was real frustrating trying to get back on the field.”

The Cowboys Need the 2023 Version of Bland

When Bland talks about getting back to his “real self,” everyone knows exactly what he means. In 2023, he was one of the most dangerous defensive players in football.

That season, Bland earned All-Pro honors, led the NFL with nine interceptions, and set an NFL record with five pick-sixes. Every time quarterbacks tested him, they risked turning a routine pass into six points for Dallas.

The Cowboys clearly believe that player is still there. Last offseason, Dallas backed that confidence up financially by signing Bland to a four-year, $92 million contract. Teams don’t make that kind of commitment unless they believe a player can return to elite form. Bland believes it too.

“I’m confident right now,” he said. “This whole rehab, I’ve had no hiccups like last time. It feels way stronger.”

A New Leadership Role

Another interesting storyline entering 2026 is Bland’s growing leadership role within the defense.

With several new faces arriving in the secondary, Bland has suddenly become one of the most experienced cornerbacks on the roster despite entering only his fifth NFL season.

“It definitely came quick,” Bland said. “I’m only in year five, but it feels good to be known as a guy that some of the guys can come to because of all my experience.”

That’s a role the Cowboys need him to embrace.

Not only is Dallas counting on his playmaking ability, but it’s also counting on him to help stabilize a secondary undergoing significant changes.

New Coordinator Could Help Unlock His Game

Bland also expressed excitement about working with new defensive coordinator Christian Parker. Because Parker spent much of his coaching career working with defensive backs, Bland sees the relationship as a natural fit.

“It’s great,” Bland said. “You get somebody that has the same mindset as you and knows what’s going to happen in the game.”

For a player looking to recapture his All-Pro form, that kind of position-specific expertise could be valuable.

Motivation Is Everywhere

Perhaps the strongest theme from Bland’s comments was motivation.

He’s motivated by the injuries. Motivated by the lost playing time. Motivated by the opportunity to prove he’s still one of the league’s best corners.

He’s also motivated by the daily challenge of competing against CeeDee Lamb and George Pickens in practice.

“They’re some of the best in the league,” Bland said. “I see them every day in practice.”

For Bland, that’s preparation for the season ahead.

And after two frustrating years interrupted by injuries, he’s entering 2026 with one goal above all else.

“Trying to get back to my real self and just be ready, feel comfortable.”

If the Cowboys get that version of DaRon Bland back, their defense could look dramatically different this season. The former All-Pro finally feels healthy again, and that’s a scary thought for opposing quarterbacks.
