The Dallas Cowboys’ defensive line could soon receive a significant boost. On Wednesday, the team announced it has opened the 21-day practice window for defensive tackle Perrion Winfrey, designating him for return from the injured reserve list. This move initiates a three-week period for the Cowboys to evaluate Winfrey in practice and decide whether to activate him to the 53-man roster. For a player who impressed throughout the offseason, this is a promising step toward making his regular-season debut for Dallas.

Dallas Cowboys Perrion Winfrey: A Winding Road to Recovery

Winfrey’s journey to this point has been anything but straightforward. The 25-year-old defensive tackle earned a spot on the Cowboys’ initial 53-man roster after a standout performance in training camp and the preseason. However, his momentum was abruptly halted when he suffered a back injury near the end of the preseason, landing him on injured reserve in early September. This setback delayed a comeback story that had been building since he signed with the team.

Originally a fourth-round draft pick by the Cleveland Browns in 2022 out of Oklahoma, Winfrey’s early career was turbulent, leading to his release in the summer of 2023. After a brief stint on the New York Jets’ practice squad, he found a new opportunity in the UFL with the Birmingham Stallions. His dominant play there caught the attention of the Cowboys, who signed him this offseason. He quickly turned heads with his disruptive presence on the defensive interior, making his subsequent injury all the more disappointing. Now, with his practice window open, Winfrey has a clear path to rejoining a defense that could benefit from his energy and talent.

Potential Impact on the Defensive Line

Winfrey’s return could provide valuable depth and a fresh wave of talent to the interior of the Cowboys’ defensive line. While Dallas has a solid rotation, Winfrey’s skill set as a penetrating pass-rusher from the tackle position offers a different dimension. During the preseason, he demonstrated a quick first step and the power to disrupt plays in the backfield, qualities that are always in high demand.

His activation would give defensive coordinator Matt Eberflus another versatile piece to deploy. Winfrey has the potential to be a key rotational player, helping to keep starters fresh and providing a spark against opposing offensive lines. His presence could create more one-on-one opportunities for edge rushers by commanding attention in the middle. The next 21 days will be crucial in determining his conditioning and readiness for game action. If Winfrey can pick up where he left off in August, he could become an important contributor for the Cowboys’ defense down the stretch.
