Dallas Cowboys’ Defensive Rookies Are Turning Heads Early In Training Camp
It’s only three days into training camp, but the Dallas Cowboys’ rookie class is already making an impression, especially on the defensive side of the ball.
While it’s important not to overreact to early camp performances, several first-year defenders are beginning to generate buzz as they compete for playing time heading into the 2026 season.
Jaishawn Barham Continues To Steal The Show For The Dallas Cowboys
No rookie has generated more excitement than linebacker Jaishawn Barham. The third-round pick has received consistent praise from head coach Brian Schottenheimer, and Saturday may have been his best practice yet. Barham broke up a pass intended for CeeDee Lamb in the red zone, made a strong stop against the run and later showcased his athleticism by sticking with a running back on a wheel route in coverage.
Perhaps even more encouraging was the amount of work he received with the first-team defense. That’s not something coaches hand out lightly, especially this early in camp.
If Barham continues this trajectory, he could carve out a significant role much sooner than expected.
Caleb Downs Is Flashing His Playmaking Ability
Safety Caleb Downs also put together an impressive practice. One of the highlights came when he nearly intercepted a pass after teammate Malachi Lawrence generated pressure on the quarterback. Downs’ instincts and ball skills have been evident throughout camp, and plays like that are exactly why the Cowboys invested heavily in him.
Creating turnovers has been an emphasis for Dallas, and Downs appears capable of helping in that department immediately.
Malachi Lawrence Is Making His Presence Felt
Lawrence may not have filled up the stat sheet Saturday, but his impact was noticeable. The rookie defensive lineman consistently disrupted plays, including the rep that helped force Downs’ near interception. Generating pressure is one of the quickest ways for young defensive linemen to earn snaps, and Lawrence appears to be doing exactly that.
If he continues collapsing the pocket, the Cowboys could have another contributor in their defensive line rotation.
Dallas’ Rookie Class Has Plenty Of Momentum
While Barham, Downs and Lawrence grabbed most of the attention, they weren’t the only newcomers making plays.
Tight end Michael Trigg hauled in his first touchdown of camp, undrafted receiver Camden Brown continued building a strong case for a roster spot, and Anthony Smith showed off impressive route running and body control with one of the better catches of the day.
It’s an encouraging sign that multiple members of the rookie class are standing out instead of just one or two players.
The Defense Could Get An Early Boost
Training camp highlights don’t guarantee regular-season success, but the early returns have been promising for Dallas.
The Cowboys are looking for young players to step into meaningful roles after several offseason changes, and their rookie defenders are giving the coaching staff plenty of reasons for optimism.
If Barham, Downs and Lawrence continue stacking productive practices, don’t be surprised if all three become important pieces of Dallas’ defense sooner rather than later.
