College World Series Day 1: Top Overall Seed Loses In Stunner

Feb 27, 2026; Arlington, TX, USA; UCLA vs, Tennessee during the Amegy Bank College Baseball Series at Globe Life Field.

The College World Series on the first day was wild and had a lot for viewers to like. There were a bunch of blowouts (there were several odd, David vs. Goliath-type matchups), and the number one overall seed, UCLA, lost to St. Mary’s. One game was postponed and finished on Saturday morning.

There are more big matchups in the College World Series today. The teams in each regional pod that did not play yesterday play today. There are four teams in each regional pod, and the games are played at the seeded team on their campus. Do you think there will be more upsets today?

The College World Series on the first day was full of excitement and had one surprise. There were several lopsided games and odd matchups. There was also one big upset, with the top overall seed, UCLA, falling to St. Mary’s.

St. Mary’s defeated top overall seed UCLA 3-2, in one of the most shocking college baseball upsets of all-time. It is a good thing for UCLA that the regionals are a double-elimination format. They still have a chance, but their road is going to be difficult.

On the flip side, Georgia Tech destroyed the University of Illinois at Chicago 22-5. Georgia also defeated Long Island University 18-2. Georgia is the number three overall seed, and they were the Southeastern Conference champions. In that same vein, North Carolina blanked Virginia Commonwealth University, 8-0. VCU got only two hits.

There was another pretty surprising upset, with Milwaukee defeating the number four seed, Auburn. Texas destroyed Holy Cross, 19-1. Alabama also destroyed Alabama State, 21-3. Oregon also had a lopsided victory over Yale, 14-3.

On day 1, there were four other close games. Florida beat Rider 8-7. St. John’s upset Florida State 6-5, and Little Rock upset Southern Miss 7-4. Nebraska defeated South Dakota State, 4-1.

There were also a pair of 10-1 games, with Mississippi State beating Lipscomb and West Virginia defeating Binghampton. Finally, Kansas beat Northeastern 6-3.
