West Virginia football recruit Chris Wilson Jr., 17, was killed in a shooting in Muncie, Indiana early Monday morning. According to ESPN, emergency dispatchers received a report of gunshots at 2:59 a.m. Wilson, discovered in a vehicle with multiple gunshot wounds, was pronounced dead on scene. Per AP News, local police continue investigating his death.

Wilson, a 6-foot-4, 235-pound defensive end from Yorktown High School in Indiana, was the fourth-ranked prospect committed to West Virginia’s 2027 recruiting class. ESPN ranked him the No. 11 overall recruit from Indiana in that class.
He held offers from more than a dozen Division I programs, including Auburn, Cincinnati and Purdue, before committing to West Virginia in June following an official visit with the Mountaineers. During his junior season in 2025, Wilson recorded 25 tackles with four sacks and an interception while leading Yorktown to a Class 4A sectional title. This fall, he had recorded 12 tackles and a sack through five games.
Wilson also competed as a discus thrower on Yorktown’s track and field team.
School and university response
Yorktown High School principal Stacey Brewer acknowledged Wilson’s death Monday morning in a message to parents and students.
“With great sadness, I share that Chris Wilson, a senior at Yorktown High School, died tragically early this morning,” Brewer wrote. “His family has given us permission to share this news. Chris was a valued member of our school, our football team, and our community. Our hearts are with his family, friends, and teammates.”
What’s next
The Mountaineers (3-2) host Arizona on Oct. 10 at 12 p.m. ET on TNT. The university has not announced any schedule changes.
